Linked 52 | Party

Today is the first day of our summer vacation.  The kids have been having lots of parties all week at school to celebrate the end of the year.  Luaus, field day, dances, ice cream parties, etc.  However this mom is not celebrating.  While a break from the crazy schedules of school and extracurricular activities is very nice, the ho hum days of summer are not my favorite.  So many moms are excited for the summer and having their kids home to run and play and go on trips, swim in their pool, etc.  Summers are very different for me.  I am a homebody.  I like staying at home.  Plus, it gets super duper hot here and there's only so much you can do when it's 108 degrees outside.  Kids just don't get excited about weekly trips to Target like I do :)
Like I said in my FB status yesterday - I feel like an activities director during the summer.  4 kids home all day long everyday and expecting me to entertain them.  And don't even get me started on the endless amount of eating!  I think a lot of it has to do with planning though.  If we had some great plans or family vacations over the summer to look forward to, the outlook would be very different.  But swim lessons, piano lessons and a 2 day family reunion doesn't exactly rate high on the fun scale, for me or the kids.  It's somewhat embarrassing when people have asked me lately what our summer plans are.  I can almost see the pity in their eyes when I tell them.

I don't mean to be a downer, this is just my reality.  I am trying hard to think of stuff to do with the kids to make the summer more enjoyable, so any ideas you want to share would be most appreciated :)

For now, I'll just dream I'm on a beach somewhere, relaxing with a good magazine while my kids play in the sand and surf.

i hope the four of them can think of something while their mama stays cool in the house. ;) we played a lot of soccer and when the heat was up.. we jumped in those little $15 target pools ;) my mom would sometimes find big plastic tarps so we could slip n slide, lol

I let my kids pick some fun things to do (u-swirl, movie night, splash park,, play with friends, go get kids meals somewhere, etc) and I am going to let them pick one every couple days as a reward for doing jobs around the house. We also got the summer family pass at the YMCA so we would have somewhere to swim! Add a trip to Utah in the middle of all that and I hope I have enough to keep my kids busy.

Does your town have free summer movies? I used to do those with the kids weekly. You can stay cool and you get a snack. Food and entertainment...kill two birds with one stone...Ha!

Summers are so hard. I totally agree with you - I'm the mom who likes to be home. I always wondered what do people do in that kind of heat?! Maybe the library? Or cheap movies? Free bowling?...We just signed-up for free bowling for the summer.
It's got to be a lot harder entertaining four rather than just one. Hang in there!

Normally my summers feel like yours, and I can relate to every word, especially feeling like a cruise ship director...and the endless eating! For some reason this year, maybe bc our school year was so busy and draining, I have been anticipating summer.
I'm always trying to come up with free/cheap things to do. Our local movie theater brings older movies during the summer on Wed/Thur for a dollar. Some of the movies we've seen--some not. Even so it's fun to just get out of the house (bring our own pop corn) and sit in a cool theater. We also buy a bunch of water balloons in the summer. Filling them up occupies them for hours!
Hang in there H! School will be here before you know it!

Kids who have straight A's on there report cards get into Madame Tussaude's wax museum all summer long. And kids under 6 are free.
