Tonight is our ward's Fathers & Sons Camp out. It's a big deal this year because Mason will be going for the first time with Daddy and Zachary, although Zach is a little miffed he has to 'share' this special time with his little brother. The last couple of days he's had a hard time getting used to the fact that Mason is going this year - he even said this morning that he hoped Dad would forget that Mason is coming!! I guess Zach just wants Dad all to himself. It will be awhile before I can reap the full benefits of Fathers & Sons, but I look forward to a few years from now when all the boys in our family will go camping and then Taylor and I can have some fun alone girl time!!
Since Andrew is one of the EQ Presidents (we have 2 quorums in our huge ward) of course that means food assignments. Andrew thinks it easier to buy all the supplies himself rather than make dozens of assignments. Last year his quorum was in charge of breakfast and he came home with a lot of leftover milk (guess men just aren't big milk drinkers!) This year his quorum was assigned hot dogs & buns, and dessert. Andrew decided to do S'mores like they had last year. He said he needed enough to feed 125-150 people, but worried about having too much food again.
Being the loving wife that I am, I graciously offered to go buy all the stuff Andrew would need. The hot dogs were easy and straight forward; the S'mores required a little more thought. Of course no one eats just one S'more so I calculated based on everyone having two. I did what any other rational human being would do and read the serving sizes on the packages, did simple division and came up with 11 boxes of graham crackers, 72 Hershey bars, and 5 bags of marshmallows. After thinking about it, I believe I grossly underestimated the marshmallows. Andrew said maybe 72 Hershey bars weren't enough either, thinking alot of the kids will just grab and eat them. Looks like I'll be heading back to the store this afternoon for more chocolate and marshmallows.
So I asked Andrew - with all this roasting of hot dogs and marshmallows, will there be any sticks or wire hangers for everyone to use? What about napkins and plates to put the food on? He didn't know what's going on with any of that. I can see it now: over 100 boys and fathers sitting around the campfire sharing a couple sticks, little kids dropping their food in the dirt, everyone wiping their hands on their shirts.
Do you think they would notice if I kept a few Hershey bars for myself?

Our fathers and sons was supposed to be tonight, but was cancelled because of the tornado damage. I'm kind of bummed because we have some of the best BBQ-ers in the south in our ward and they were going to cook for us. Instead we are doing a big service project. ... and we have to bring our own water. I feel gypped. But I'm glad to help where I can.
Ah... boys don't need plates or napkins. They've got grubby hands and sleeves! Just reason #101 why men and women are wired differently. That would have been our first delegated item. :)
For us women it's easy. Smores run out - good, saved me some calories- move on. Men just whine about it- I say let them whine!
For the record, of the 11 boxes of graham crackers we purchased, 8 were left. Neither hershey bars nor marshmallows remained (well, only a few marshmallows).
So the moral of the story is: poeple really don't like smores. They just like to eat chocolate and roast marshmallows. Also for the record, I want to note that that sometimes its just easier to get the assignment done. It would have been disasterous to assign out a box of chocolates to each elder. So no, I'm not one of THOSE...
Life is like a box of chocolates....
Andrew
It's a good thing the men have the women to do all the last minute figuring. Who needs plates and napkins anyway.?
I really admire you Heidi for being the 3rd councelor in the EQ presidency. I am also that of the Young Men Presidency! I love it!
Heidi, We are going to Oceanside, where are you guys going?
You are a seriously nice wife. Does Andrew know that? :)
