No, it's not time for the kids to head back to school. That's not for 5 more weeks (not that I'm counting). Nope, this time it was my turn for class.
Photography has been a little hobby of mine for the last couple of years. My pictures have always turned out okay, especially with lots of help from Photoshop! But I always knew they could be much better if I only knew how to operate my camera. I've read the manuals, asked friends, and looked up tutorials online and learned a few things, but still wondered why my pictures weren't the high caliber I was looking for. Since getting a big, fancy camera last Christmas, I've been determined to take better shots and learn how to use my camera properly.
A photographer friend of mine told me about some classes that a local photographer (the talented Jeanna Hayes) was teaching in her home and I knew it was exactly what I needed. I've admired her work for awhile and it just so happens that her aunt is married to Andrew's brother, so we're practically family!
What a fun night. Jeanna had it set up like a school theme. When the students arrived we were given notebooks and an apple with our name on it.
It was Photography 101 and she taught us so many things and explained what all those functions do. The main purpose was to show us how to get off of the Auto setting on our cameras and learn how to be more comfortable shooting in Manual mode. Words I knew like Aperture, ISO, shutter speed, RAW.....all beginning to make much more sense. She taught us for 2 straight hours and I was writing down notes as quickly as I could. It was a great experience and I learned so much.
After class was over, I received my "diploma" as a graduate of JHS. This little note was attached to a mini bundt cake (that was delicious by the way and didn't last long enough for me to snap a picture of it!)
Of course I won't become a super fabulous photographer overnight, but with lots of practice and a much better understanding of my camera, I hope my pictures become much better. I even shot the 2 photos in this post on Manual mode and shocked they turned out so well -- Yay Me!!

Yea! You'll do so great with photography! Those two pictures are awesome!!! Congrats and good luck!
YEAH YOU!! You know i took classes, real lots and looked online at others work even more but the thing that really made it all CLICK for me was just shooting....A LOT!! I'm talking thousands and thousands of pictures. The beauty of digital is that is doesn't cost a lot to learn by shooting like it would with film!! Good luck, and lets go shoot sometime!
Oh, how fun! Does she give photography classes regularly??? I'm interested!
That is really cool. You know you can always tell the difference from someone that actually knows what they are doing and someone who doesn't. There is just a different look than and ordinary picture. Good Luck with your photography endevours.
Awesome. I used to babysit Jeanna:) Don't you love when all those words you know start to make sense? It just takes a good teacher. Now I expect to see more pictures on your blog!
yea, my goal is to get a good camera (my good one takes film)and then take some classes just for my own knowledge. I've always loved taking pics.
Hi! It's Erika.
That sounds like a neat class and a great experience! I doubt there are any classes around here that are near that fun. Your camera would take a while to figure out, but you take great pictures. I wish you luck for any future picture taking!
~Love your niece eri :D
Heidi we are REALLY going to like eachother or not! LOL I swear everything you write or post are the same things I am either thinking, or doing. I too received a very nice camera 2 Christmas' ago (man I LOVE that Santa, wish he came every year). I have fallen in love with taking pictures. I REALLY need to take some classes though. I looked into CSN, but for right now life is too busy for me to commit. One day! :) I really do LOVE the picture you took of the tomatoes!
