Ah, date nights. It really bugs Andrew when I call it date night, so for his sake I will refer to it as Time Away From Kids or TAFK. (probably a more fitting title would be Get Me Out Of Here Before I Strangle One Of The Kids, but I guess GMOOHBISOOTK is a tad too long and almost sounds like a bad word when you try to pronounce it.)
We've been desperate for some alone time because we had three such TAFK nights within 10 days. That's a huge record for us. We haven't mastered weekly TAFK nights yet - we have other things going on or we can't find a sitter. Sometimes it's once every other week or sadly only once a month that we get a chance to leave the house alone. Obviously our children aren't old enough to leave home alone (legally anyway) so we're counting down the days until two years or so from now when Taylor will be 11 and she can babysit her brothers.
Like most nights out, we just jumped in the car without much thought of where we wanted to go or what we'd like to do - we're just happy to be away. The first night we grabbed a bite to eat then hit Target for some leisurely shopping. A week later we had TAFK night number two. It was sorta last minute, so nothing planned. We drove around discussing dinner options before ending up at Sweet Tomatoes. After some unsuccessful attempts at finding an entertainment center at a few places, we called it a night.
I had a babysitter lined up again for the very next day, but by then we had run out of ideas. We weren't interested in any movies that were showing and had already hit most of the stores we wanted to. Andrew and I walked around the new REI store in Summerlin for a bit but not wanting to waste any more of our time, we headed to the car. Of course I would have been content going to a place like Pottery Barn or Williams Sonoma, but Andrew wouldn't go for that. At this point we felt pretty pathetic that we couldn't think of a single place to go that was close by. Obviously there are a lot of places on the strip or across town that we could have gone to, but we simply didn't have the time (our sitter had to be home at a certain time.)
Out of complete boredom we decided to head to the Meadows (Ghettos) mall. It's been a LONG time since either one of us had been there. If I recall, the last time we were there it was a few years ago. It was Christmas time and we had 2 or 3 kids with us in tow. After dealing with the kids and making numerous stops in lots of stores, I vowed to never step foot in a mall with kids again.
Once we were there, I quickly felt like we stuck out like a sore thumb. Andrew was looking at shoes when I made the comment that I was feeling out of place to which he replied, "Really? I'm starting to feel right at home!" My only request was a quick look in Dillards for some church clothes so we headed over there. That's when I started to feel at home - Dillards will always remind me of my mom and my childhood. I would go shopping there with her all the time growing up. On our way out of the mall we hit Hot Dog on a Stick for some lemonades then headed for home.
After our less than exciting nights out, I decided we are in a rut. We need some new ideas for our TAFK nights. Does anyone else have this problem? Don't get me wrong - any chance I get to spend time with my husband is great. Sometimes those quiet evenings of dinner and a stop at Target are just what we need. But a break from the ordinary would be nice. Any ideas?

You forgot the part where you were so bored that you both text me. ha Ha. We are in the go to dinner rut. I am ok with that though. Lets go out. Dinner with friends is funner than alone.
If any of you even think of suggesting playing board games, or gathering together to play like we're in seminary with such cutesie games as "pass the orange neck to neck" or that snort game that has been attempted recently (with much regret), think again and do not waste the effort it takes to type that out.
Jill--did you just say funner? :) Oh no you dint.
I actually like the mall. The Meadows Mall makes me feel at home. It makes me want to speak in my second language (ebonics)--spanish is my third language--and go try on BKs at Foot Locker.
Homey don't play dat.
Peace out.
Have you seen the Titanic exhibit? We really enjoyed that. There is a part of it where you walk through a replica of the deck. They have the temperature what it would have been, and Kevin laughed at me the whole time because I glued myself to the wall and started hyperventilating. We won't ever be going on a cruise, but the exhibit was fantastic. We've also walked around the forum shops and had yummy deserts.
I also dislike when people use the phrase "Date Night." Too mormonish. Usually means dinner at one of the following (Chili's, Applebees, Cafe Rio, Rubios, or Baja Fresh) followed by a movie. B O R I N G
I use "It's business time."
And we're empty nesters....Yes, I am rubbing it in. ROFLOL
Keith
Bowling, or an art musem, or golfing range. I know I can't beleive I am suggesting golfing, but it can be fun
I here ya on the rut thing. Here are some things that we have done in the last year that I thot were pretty fun.
Bowling, a hockey game (my first time and it was way funner than I thot), college gymnastics meet, a hike, guitar hero, a walk around a lake or something like that.
I hope those are ideas that help.
Andrew...No, you can't have a discount! Why? Because you totally accused me of being “dballer24” and writing that crazy (and rude) comment on his blog regarding the post on cheerleaders! So now I am the psycho-stalker ex! So, no, you can not have a discount, in fact, you will have to pay double! :)
P.S. Don't be a dud...take your wife on a hot date!
Whatever…yes you did. In the comment section of that post you wrote, “Hey baller24, do I get a discount”! You’re a sell-out!
Nevermind??? What are you referring to? You can't just leave it at that, do share!
Jill -
give us a call anytime, we always love having dinner with you guys.
Erin -
I've always wanted to see that Titanic exhibit and had totally forgotten about it, thanks for the reminder.
Keith -
next time I go to Cafe Rio and a movie I'm definitely inviting you, or maybe you would be willing to stay home and watch our kids?
Darcie and Carrie -
great suggestions. We do love bowling!
Great ideas everyone - keep em coming!!!
I think I'm gonna throw up. Half the post's are from stalkers on this blog.
Big brother #1
We're in a rut aswell! I think that we are just so excited to get out of the house with no kids, that we forget the whole "planning something fun to do thing!"
Some things that we have done in the past would be, cooking class and we went and painted pottery a few times.
P.S. school is soo great!! Thanks for asking! You should come in and be a model for me when I need one! I'll color your hair red and green for Christmas. It'll be great!! lol
Sometimes on Tuesday nights Metro Pizza offers a class on how they make their pizza. Gary has been with the scouts and we've been meaning to go, just haven't found a free Tuesday night. He said it was amazing and they feed you a bunch of stuff. Maybe we should get a group and go sometime.
Now that Aliante Station is open they've got some good cover bands playing on the weekends if you're up for some dancing. We like to go out with friends, then we don't bore each other and we're usually available if you need a couple. There's always the old stand by of make out point, just find some empty desert and park... just make sure you put on the E brake!Ha!
We definitely need to do another couples vlolleyball night before we move! Rich and I were recently saying how we wished we had gotten together more with the both of you.
Ahh the good old days of dates at Target:) Hope it's a Super Target. I wish we lived there so we could go out with you guys some time, but alas, we barely go out with our friends here. Try WalMart to get out of your rut.
