Of course we had to sit in the audience with our kids during the meeting until it was close to our turn to speak. I quickly walked up when all the deacons were headed to their seats after passing the Sacrament. There was a youth speaker before me and I leaned over and joked with her to read her talk REALLY SLOWLY. She kinda chuckled and said, "Uh, okay."
Here's what I found very interesting......as I sat there on the stand and watched the congregation during the youth speakers' talk, I quickly noticed how the majority of people were all looking down. Hardly anyone was looking up and watching this young woman give her talk. It was that way for the duration of her talk, which lasted about 5 minutes. I'm thinking, what's the deal?? I thought it was kinda funny and wondered what everybody was looking down at ---- Were they nodding off and sleeping? Reading something? Staring at their shoes?
I've been serving in the Primary Presidency for the past 3 months now and as I'm sure you who've had Primary callings know......when you're up in front of a whole bunch of kids you do a lot to grab their attention and try to have reverence. You sing a wiggle song, you fold your arms and wait for them to follow your example and calm down, etc. etc. One little trick I like to do sometimes is quietly whisper and say to the Primary kids, "If you can hear my voice, put your finger on your nose" and then I wait until I can see all the kids touching their noses before I move on.
Well, as I sat there about ready to stand up and give my talk, I quickly switched into Primary mode and thought to myself --- I should stand up at the pulpit and ask everyone to fold their arms, eyes on me, and quietly whisper into the microphone...."Brothers and Sisters, if you can hear me, touch your nose." Of course it would have been totally inappropriate but very funny!!!
Do you think that would have gotten everyone's attention??
Maybe I should have done it.....it probably would have guaranteed me never having to speak in Sacrament again!

Man I am bummed we weren't there to hear your talk and I think it would have been great if you had called for attention. It's much better to speak when you feel like the congregation is actually listening!
HAHA! I WOuLd have done that if I had thought about it! Too funny! Next time - DO IT! We spoke on Sunday too. Only, in my ward it seemed like everyone was staring right at me. Oh, well... Oh, and btw - this was the first time we have spoken in almost 5 years. You guys must give really good talks! Good job!
I totally think that you should have done that. I would have loved it! Although you and Andrew have to talk more then most I always get excited to see you guys on the stand because I know we are in for a treat!!
My biggest fear would be speaking in sacrement meeting. I even tell them no when they have asked me to do the pray. I suck. I could barely do sharing time twice a year and almost had a party when I heard teachers didn't have to do it anymore.
You guys must get requested a lot.
You should have done it. You would have gotten the kids attention thought. We were sitting kind of kitty corner from you and when you mentioned not going to Utah and Zack pump going out he got so embarassed and covered his face with his magazine. I thought it was so funny. He is such a little guy in the big chapel and he thought all eyes were on him. Great talk!
I will say when I spoke I tried a little harder to talk slower and make eye contact to see if anyone was paying attention!
And yes Stacey, I did notice that I embarrassed Zackie when I mentioned his name. Poor kid hates it when I talk about him!!
I love it I think I will use that next time:) I don't think we will make it to Vegas until summer unfortunately. But if you guys are in San Fran give us a call:)
You totally should have done it. That poor YW. She deserved to be listed to. Call them out on it! We have the same issue in our ward though - the one where the exact same people speak ALL THE TIME! It bugs me. Not that I don't like what they have to say, I just think hearing another voice would be refreshing. (I'm not dogging you in the slightest.) However, I have never been asked to speak, so I guess I can't really complain. But, then again, no one asks much of me - I'm the brain patient. I guess that makes me mental ;)
That would have been pretty funny! Considering you are in Primary and all you could have said something about that's what you do in there! That's why you shouldn't sweat too much about giving a talk, only a few people actually listen to the whole thing!!
